You Might Be Sleeping On a Filthy Mattress

Have you ever thought about what lurks inside your mattress?

All those hot sweaty summer nights, the kids spilling juice, and let’s not forget dust mites. Let’s face it, the mattress you sleep on is filthy.

Mattresses can harbor dust mites, dead skin, dirt, and other debris, which means they need to be cleaned regularly – especially if you or someone in your home suffers from allergies, if you have pets or if you are a midnight snacker (or if boyf/hubby is the one snacking).

Even if your sheets are clean, you may notice that your mattress has an unpleasant smell after a while (especially if you prefer to shower in the morning as opposed to just before bedtime). Body odor easily transfers to your clothing as well as your mattress—and it lingers.

But unlike bed sheets and pillows, you can’t simply toss a mattress into the washing machine. So how exactly do you deodorize a mattress? The good news is that cleaning a mattress is far easier than you might think.

Carolina McCauley, an Australian-based influencer known for her home cleaning hacks, has a few tips in her latest Instagram Reel for how to clean a mattress in 8 simple steps. See below and scroll further down to watch the quick video. (To follow Caroline and see more go HERE)

How to clean and deodorize a mattress

  1. Pour ½ cup of baking soda into a small bowl.
  2. Adds 20 drops of lavender essential oil to the baking soda.
  3. Sprinkle the mixture directly onto the mattress.
  4. Leave it there to sit for about 30 minutes.
  5. Vacuum it up.
  6. Spray your favorite air freshener onto the mattress.
  7. Air-dry it out with a fan.
  8. Place a cover on your totally refreshed mattress.

I absolutely love this tip! I am always trying to find ways to keep my home smelling good and being clean at the same time. I usually air my mattresses out if I am out for a weekend and come back and vacuum it. I also like to use baby powder on my son’s mattress to give it that baby fresh smell which he really likes. I will definitely add this to my to-do list. Thank you
