All You Need To Know About Moles

When it comes to your skin, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Whether you have had a mole pop up or an old mole seems to be of concern, here is everything you need to know when it comes to these little brown spots.

Moles are common small brown spots or growths on the skin. They can either be flat or elevated and are generally round in shape. Most people have moles and are usually nothing to worry about but we do advise you to get them checked from time-to-time.

How should we be checking our moles?

Dermatologists recommend that you check your moles yourself at least every three months by using the ABCDE method, which you will find listed below.

A- Asymmetry: Where one half of your mole does not match the other.

B- Border: Check the outline, moles may have edges that are ragged or irregular.

C – Colour: Is the colour uneven?

D- Diameter: Have you noticed a change in the size of your mole?

E – Evolving: Is the mole differing from surrounding moles?

What are the different types?

Some moles may be present from birth and they are called naevi, commonly known as birth marks. Other common moles include:

Junctional: These are flat moles with a dark pigment.

Dermal: These moles sit in the skin creating a raised domed mole. They are often light brown or pink in colour.

Combined: These are a mixed pattern of two different moles in one lesion.

Blue: These moles are deeply rooted in the skin creating a blue tint to the moles colour.

Now that you have a slight insight into moles take a look at yours and if you see something of concern we advise you to book an appointment with your local GP, who if needed, will refer you to a specialist. X
