What you’ll need to remove the oil stain. Make sure you have plenty of natural light and these cleaning products available.
- WD-40
- Q-tips
- Baking soda
- Scrap of cardboard
- Liquid Soap
- Sturdy brush
- Your regular laundry routine once stain has been removed
Why this method works:
I know this sounds completely insane but while doing research on oil stains the best way to ‘revive’ your old oil stain is by adding a little more oil. Do not use vegetable or olive oil these will just came the already bad oil stain worse. The best oil to use is the WD-40, I know this might seem a tad extreme but considering we already have a bad oil stain what do we have to lose?
Reviving the oil stain:
Place the scrap of cardboard underneath the stains, between the front and back of the article of clothing. This is vital because you do not want the WD-40 to spread through to the back of your shirt and create a new stain. Carefully apply the WD-40, if your stains are very small spray the WD-40 into a small bowl and use Q-tips to dab on the stains. Remember less is more in this case because the WD-40 will spread. Repeat this process on the stains 2 or 4 times until you have a fine, dry dusting of baking soda with no major lumps.
Lifting the stain:
Pour a pile of baking soda on the oil stain. Make sure you add more than you think you’ll need. Now bring out your toothbrush and spread the baking soda into the stain. The baking soda will absorb all the oil that the WD-40 has helped revive. Make sure you brush the fabric well into the fabric to get the oils out. Continue doing that until you have slightly lumpy chunks of baking soda.
Repeat this process on the stains 2 or 4 times until you have a fine, dry dusting of baking soda with no major lumps.
Pre-treating the stain:
Once you are done brushing the baking soda into the stain, you will move on to the liquid dish soap. Pour liquid detergent directly on the stain. Using the toothbrush brush the pre-wash treatment into the stained areas. Let the liquid soap sit on the stains for 30 minutes to 24 hours.
Finished:
Once all of the above has been completed you can throw your stained clothing item into the wash and once dried you should no longer have any stains. Please remember this stain removal trick works best on cotton and cotton blends.
