At rubybox we are all about women supporting women and celebrating all women successes be it young start-up businesses to women finding their true self.
COVID had really put a damper on all positive news and we felt that we needed to bring some of that positivity back and our genuine love for local products and start-ups.
Introducing Love Shouts a local accessory brand based in Cape Town. These earrings are hand crafted pieces of wearable art that have been made using clay making each and every one unique and special.
The process of making these earrings is quite unique in the sense that the clay is conditioned and worked by hand – adding colour and texture to it, sometimes by means of golf leaf. Once shaped the clay is baked in an oven, sanded, polished and then the final touches are added depending on the earring style, either brass pieces are added or other clay combinations.
What’s even cooler about these earrings is that they are super light weight and hardy so there is no need to worry about your statement earrings weighing down your ears or dropping the earrings and worrying it will break, because that won’t be the case.
We had a chat with the owner of Love Shouts Marlinette Newman where we delved into a little more details about the brand below.
1. Where does the name come from and what is your brand vision for the business?
11 Years ago as I was dreaming about my business I was going through a variety of names in my head. I picked up a book and read this: “Love Shouts and Sin Whispers” and my heart just clicked..LoveShouts. Love is visible, it’s active, it shows itself, loud and clear. This has always truly been my heart for owning my own business, it has to be about more than just myself.
2. Of all start up avenues you could have chosen – why accessories?
Every woman knows the pleasure that beautiful accessories bring. The ability to express your unique style with just the right pair of earrings, a complimentary necklace, the hand bag that pics up on the belt. The possibilities are endless, and for a creative like me what more could I ask for.
3. How long have you wanted to do this and what was your push or aha moment that made you eventually start?
I have had a dream of owning my own business for over 10 years. At first this dream was owning a gift shop, which evolved over the years. I always knew that I wanted to have some sort of retail business/shop, but I never knew that this would be in Accessories For Women, nevertheless my own Handcrafted Accessories.
My aha moment came through a moment of prayer. I was in a job that I knew no longer held a future for me, and as I was on my knees asking God “What’s next?” I clearly felt that it was time to resign and do my own thing. At this stage I still had no clue what my business would be, but I just knew so clearly that I had to move and ready myself for the next season.
4. What does a typical day look like for you
To be honest most days are a bit of scramble..Hahaha. I kind of take each day as it comes. I am still working at putting together a weekly schedule and managing tasks, which is not how my head has ever worked. So again, lots to learn.
One consistent practice that makes a world of a difference for me is to have my quiet time in the morning before starting work. This is my quiet prayer time where I also lay down all the challenges of the day ahead, all the decisions I need to make and the problems I need to solve. It is here where I find so much direction and clarity which sets my to-do list for the day.
5. What are your goals for your business over the next year – where would you like to see your brand go?
My one goal would be to expand LoveShouts to include more people under her umbrella. This includes both our family of customers and followers, but also our internal family. Partnering with and empowering others.
6. What have been some of your biggest challenges as a small female startup?
I think the biggest challenge is trusting yourself and knowing that your idea is a good idea. Everything ahead of you is new and there is so much to learn, so many decisions to make and so many tasks at hand, and it all relies on you.
Your heart, your idea, your passion, energy and drive. Not everyone will love your idea, some will tell you that you are making a huge mistake. There will be rejection! So at the core I had to very quickly learn to trust that inner voice and be confident in my decision making.
7. What advice would you give another female who is wanting to start her side business?
Above all else, you should never start a business purely for financial reasons. Running a business takes long hours and hard decisions. If you don’t have a better reason than money to keep going, you are most likely going to fail.
Also, a little bit of faith goes a long way. That includes faith in yourself.
8. Lastly, will we be seeing necklaces and bracelets in the future or will you be sticking to earrings for now?
We are certainly looking at pushing the boundaries and increasing our offering into a wider selection of curated, hand picked and handcrafted accessories.
