Are you worried about the colour of your period?
The colour of a females period blood can be a clear health indicator for a female.
During menstruation, our bodies shed tissue and blood from the uterus through the vagina. This discharge varies from pink to dark brown, or black depending on how old it is. The longer it sits, the darker it gets because the blood oxidises, it reacts with oxygen in your body and gets darker.
Hormonal changes and health conditions can also affect the colour and texture of period blood.

Pink period
When you just start your period, your vaginal discharge may mix with some fresh, bright red blood. Lighter periods may also appear more pink and red. This is not anything to worry about.
Bright red period
Bright red blood indicates fresh blood and a steady flow. Also, when the uterus actively contracts, it sheds blood quickly. Since the blood doesn’t have time to oxidize, it remains a vibrant red.
Unusual spotting or bleeding between menstrual cycles with bright red blood may be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection, such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea. If you experience this for long periods of time, please see a doctor.
Dark red period
Dark red period blood is a sign of old blood, and it may appear at the beginning or end of a period. Dark red blood means that the blood has not had as long to oxidize. This is completely normal.
Dark red & blood clots
If your uterus doesn’t contract well and sheds blood quickly, it can cause blood to stay in the uterus and clump together, forming clots. Clots can be tiny or big, but they are usually a deep red colour.
These clots can be caused by:
- fibroids
- endometriosis
- adenomyosis
- cancerous tumours
So it’s important for you to pay attention to them if they are too big or worrying. See your doctor if you notice that you regularly have large clots.
Brown period
Brown blood or spotting may occur as your period ends. You might experience a lighter blood colour, which then mixes with vaginal mucus discharge. Sometimes brown period can also be an early sign of pregnancy that doctors refer to as implantation bleeding. So if you are having these symptoms and thing you might be pregnant, go see a doctor.
