7 Things to Declutter Your Home

Looking for something to do during lockdown? There is no better time than right now to clean house. After all tidying up can be life changing and it can make you feel so much better about yourself and the space you are in.

A little too sentimental about unnecessary clutter? Here is a list of items that are toss-worthy and how best to dispose of them.

Single Earrings

Here’s your chance to get creative with those single earrings you have lying around the house. You could create nifty bulletin board tack or you could make a brooch or magnet by cutting off the stems with wire cutters and adding a pin packing or a magnet end with a glue gun. If you decide that’s not your thing donate them.

Old Phones and Cellphone Accessories

Majority of cell phone companies take a trade-in to refurbish and donate to charity or simply sell at a lower price and in return you get store credit.

Spices

Who doesn’t have tons of spices in their cupboards? The rule of thumb is that most spices expire after 12 months. So, when dumping your old spices throw the contents into the bin but keep the glass bottles and wash them out to reuse. They are great travel-size containers for things like cotton buds.

 Expired Beauty Products

Unopened or slightly expired beauty products are great to donate to women’s shelters. Did you know that eye make-up should be replaced every few months, especially mascara. When throwing away the very expired make-up, remove the product from the packaging and recycle the containers. Cosmetic companies like MAC offer a program where you bring 3 empty make-up containers and you receive a free lipstick, making sure their packaging is recycled properly.

Worn-Out Hairbrushes

Old hairbrushes are perfect for little girls who have dolls, that want to brush their dolly’s hair. Old brushes are also suitable to use on your pets when they need a good brush.

Socks with Holes or No Pairs

Socks with holes in them make perfect dust rags. They are also great for buffing shoe polish on your shoes. If you have kids, they are also great to turn into sock puppets by adding old buttons to the socks. If you aren’t interesting in doing any of those, you can recycle your old socks in textile recycling bins.

 Half-Burned Candles

Most candles come in glass containers, therefore half burnt candles can be tough to recycle. The best thing to do would be to try and melt down all the wax and recycle the glass container.
