Is Online Dating Safe?

The reality when it comes to online dating is that one needs to be cautious, as many of our parents instilled the phrase “don’t talk to strangers” in us when we were younger. The same applies to online dating. You need to be aware of the dangers associated with it and remember to be vigilant at all times.

When it comes to the first meet-up ensure that it is in a public area. Going on a date with someone you have not engaged with in person will make you feel vulnerable. Therefore we advise you to meet in a familiar surrounding. You should always give a friend or family member a heads up so that someone is always aware of your whereabouts as well as details of the person you are meeting.

Tips when it comes to online dating:

Don’t drink too much – We all know how much alcohol helps with calming those nerves, but it is important to keep a clear head.  Often when we are under the influence we are much more vulnerable which can often lead to dangerous situations. Also make sure to keep a close eye on your drink at all times, as it is very easy to get distracted and land up with your drink being spiked.

Don’t over share – It is okay to share general information about yourself, but it is important to not over share as nothing guarantees you that you will see this person again. We suggest that you keep personal information to yourself. If you are inquisitive about the person you are meeting then you can do a background stalk via social media before the date to give you more or less an idea of what you are in for.

Rather meet up than pick up – You don’t want someone you barely know to know where you live so rather ditch the romantic gesture of him/her offering to pick you up and take an uber or drive yourself. This way you can also make an easy escape if the date does not go according to plan.

Now go have fun, safely of course.

Feel free to share any of your personal experiences when it comes to online dating with us rubies. X
