How to ACTUALLY enjoy your downtime

By now some of us have settled into our new ‘normal’ – That might look different to each and every one of us. Some might still be working from home, some going into the office on rotation, and some of us may be back at the office full-time. Bottomline this year has been a year of focusing on how to stay afloat, how to stay positive and keep things going when it doesn’t quite seem like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. As important as working hard, hustling away and building your career is, so is downtime and spending time with yourself. But how, where and with what do I start?

Here are some tips on how to ACTUALLY enjoy your downtime:

  • According to Psychology Today, having a hobby or some downtime to yourself can lessen stress, improve brain function, and even improve heart health. Especially working from home it’s SO important to remember that leisure time isn’t laziness—it’s vital to your physical and emotional health! Find something you enjoy doing or that you’ve always wanted to do, but never had time for. Learn to play the piano, learn to cook, read your favourite book, create a new makeup look or paint.
  • Make space for downtime in your week or day. If you’re constantly working, one way to make space for downtime is to treat it like any other important appointment or task. You can even set a reminder on your phone!
  • Unlearn harmful thought patterns. Taking time to yourself and NOT thinking about work may be new to you. It is easy to criticize yourself and feel guilty for taking time to yourself. Pay attention to your thoughts while engaging in your hobby, nip the negativity or critique in the bud as soon as you think it. Remind yourself that you are worthy of time for yourself.
  • Be Mindful. Try your best to be present at the moment. If you feel anxious and stressed, calmly acknowledge and accept it, but (as mentioned previously) pay attention to those thoughts and nip it in the bud. You deserve time to yourself!
  • Start easy. Try finding a hobby that doesn’t require you to be in front of the screen. If you spend most of your work hours in front of the screen, the time away from it will do you very well.

Whether it’s music, baking, crafting, or whatever you love, hobbies can be an inexpensive, low-pressure way to reclaim your time. Finding happiness in things you enjoy, outside of your career fosters independence and the feeling of confidence. If you have the tendency to be a workaholic and struggle with work-life balance, we challenge you to take 30-60 minutes twice (or more!) a week to explore a new hobby you would’ve never made time for.

    Great piece! Finding happiness and to enjoy life, so important and true. And in our busy days we must find small moments of me te and perhaps a new hobby. Think I start looking for a Italian cooking course right away, Ruby’s inspired me! Love downtime.
