Do you know that enamel is the hardest substance in the human body? It’s the hardest tissue, even stronger than bone and it’s made up of just minerals.
You’re probably wondering, what is this ‘enamel’ that is stronger than bone?
What is Tooth Enamel?
Tooth enamel is the thin, hard, shiny, white outer covering of the tooth. It’s mostly made of minerals which give the enamel its strength so that it can protect your teeth from damage and keep them looking bright, white, and healthy.
Enamel helps protect your teeth from daily use such as chewing, biting, crunching, and grinding. Even though enamel is strong, it can erode, chip and crack but cannot be replaced so you need to take care of it.

What causes Enamel Erosion?
Tooth erosion is caused by acids from different types of food and beverages you eat and drink. Highly acidic and foods that are high in sugar such as soft drinks, fruit drinks, sour food or candy can wear away your enamel. Even a dry mouth with low saliva flow may also cause tooth decay as saliva is needed to wash away the bacteria and leftover food in your mouth.
Sometimes coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, red wine, fruit juices, and cigarettes also stain the enamel on your teeth. So you need to constantly take care of your teeth by brushing every day and using the right toothpaste that will protect your teeth.
Other things that can cause enamel erosion are:
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Medications (antihistamines, aspirin, vitamin C)
- Alcohol misuse or binge drinking. People with these conditions vomit often, which can affect
- Genetics (inherited conditions)
- Things in your environment (friction, wear and tear, stress, and corrosion)
Because enamel also insulates the teeth from different temperatures and chemicals. When enamel erodes, you may notice that you react more to hot or cold food, and sweet things since they can go through the holes in your enamel and get to the nerves inside.
What are signs of tooth enamel loss?
Sensitivity
Once the enamel on your teeth starts wearing away, the softer dentin layer becomes exposed and cause tooth sensitivity. Certain foods and temperatures of food may cause pain when as your enamel keeps eroding.
Discolouration
As the enamel wears away, the teeth may start to appear yellow as the slightly yellow dentin layer underneath the enamel may become more visible.
Cracks and chips
The edges of teeth become more rough, irregular, and jagged as enamel erodes.

Wow I didn’t know this thank you so much for the insight this really helped me understand rubybox.
I tried and tested the Pronamel Extra Fresh, My teeth is whiter and stronger after a few weeks use. I’ve changed my toothpaste preference after using Sensodyne.
This toothpaste has been a dream come true for me, I suffer from sensitivity really really bad. And in the 3 weeks that I have been using it, I am very happy. I do have the odd day when the sensitivity creeps up on me but it is not as bad as before. I am happy with the outcome. Not only do my teeth look whiter but the feeling after brushing is amazing. I went into Checkers and saw that they have the toothpaste on special, so I guess I will be buying quite a few boxes next week. Thank you Rubybox for the sample. I am a very happy lady.
