In-grown hairs can happen as a result of removing hair by either shaving, tweezing, waxing, or any other hair removal method.
In-grown hairs will cause inflammation which will lead to a solid or pus-filled bump, itching, a bacterial infection and could possibly even lead to permanent scaring.
The hair in and around your vagina is a particular common area for in-grown hairs to arise. So all in all the best prevention method is not removing your pubic hair at all, but if that is not your thing, take a look at the helpful tips below to prevent an ingrown situation.
Always use some sort of lubrication when shaving
By shaving dry hair you can create sharp edges which are prone to grow back into your skin. We recommend that you allow shaving cream or gel to soak into your skin for a few minutes to soften your hair before you begin to shave.
Use a sharp razor
With a blunt razor you are more likely to have to go over the area a multiple of times, this raises the risk of cutting yourself and getting an infection. If your razor begins to feel less effective, this is an indication to toss it out or simply replace the blade.
Shave in the direction that your hair grows
Going against the direction in which your hair grows in may allow for a closer shave, but the closer your shave the easier it is for your hair to curl back into your skin and form an in-grown hair.
Rinse your blade after every stroke
By rinsing your blade you are not only adding lubrication, but it also gets rid of any hairs clogging the blades that may make it harder to efficiently remove hair in the first stroke.
Don’t tweeze
A good tweeze is always so tempting but we rather you not. As this can leave a fragment of hair under the skins surface which will cause inflammation.
Moisturise after you shave
Moisturising helps to keep your skin less prone to dryness and irritation. Moisturisers that contain a chemical exfoliant such as lactic, glycolic or salicylic acid can help dissolve dead skin cells that are known to trap in-grown hair.
Try waxing instead
Waxing doesn’t result in those extra-sharp tips that are likely to curl back into your skin. However in-growns are still possible with waxing, therefore do not ignore the tips on this list such as keeping the area moisturised will help prevent any in-grown hair from developing.
Consider laser hair removal
Laser hair removal removes hair at a deeper level and helps keep the hair from growing back eventually over time. However there is a misconception that laser hair removal means that your hair will just never grow in the treated area again, but the results vary from person to person. Like any other medical procedure, laser hair removal can come with risks such as skin irritation and pigmentation. The procedure is also known to be trickier at achieving results in people with dark skin, blonde, white or red hair. So before you book your procedure have a chat with your dermatologist to understand whether the results will be worthwhile.
