The Effect Your Cycle Has On Your Skin

We are all well aware of the impact hormones have on our skin over the course of our life whether it be puberty , pregnancy or that time of the month.

Often women experience an influx of breakouts just before their periods start. But did you know that your monthly cycle impacts your skin even when you are not on your period. Ever wondered why some days your skin looks ‘perfect’ and other days you may experience drier patches than others, well it all comes down to your monthly cycle.

So to get into sync with your body and help you minimise breakouts, we have created a monthly skin cycle for you.

Day 1-5: Your Period

You would think that cramps and bloating would be enough during this time but oh no, we cannot forget the spots that have broken out along with the rest. During this stage of your cycle it is important to stick to your regular skin care routine. You must not change anything up only ensure that you are diligent with removing make-up during this stage. Make sure you are drinking lots of water and avoid greasy foods. To keep track of when exactly you will be getting your period click here to read about the top period app trackers.

Day 5-10: The Dry Stage

Your period has come to an end and your skin soon becomes it driest at this stage of the cycle. We suggest you use a overnight hydration mask to keep your skin hydrated. Overnight hydration treatments help to strengthen your skin’s barrier. Do not just use any products, try stick to products with calming, anti-inflammatory properties like cucumber and aloe vera.

Day 10-21: The Healthy Stage

As ovulation approaches, the hormone oestrogen is produced which boosts collagen this making your skin appear glowy. During this stage of your cycle your skin is at its brightest and healthiest, well hydrated and breakout free. Ingredients are also absorbed more efficiently into your skin at this stage, we therefore advise you to make the most of it and use active ingredients and antioxidant serums.

Day 22-28: The PMS Stage

As your next period is on the horizon, the hormone testosterone increase and boosts the production of the natural oil sebum. Sebum can cause the skin to have a greasy appearance in return clogging pores, producing white heads and breakouts. This is when you need to turn to clay-based masks and facial products which contain charcoal and salicylic acid in order to help keep your skin as clear as possible. If you are looking to treat yourself to a facial at any time this is the best time of the month to do so.
