What is Xerosis Cutis?

It may sound exotic, but xerosis cutis is simply the medical term for dry skin.

It comes from the Greek word for dry (xero) and the Latin word for skin (cutis). Dry skin is extremely widespread, especially among older adults. It is usually a minor and temporary problem but can cause discomfort and lead to heightened self-consciousness. It is more common during the cold winter months and its frequency increases with age.

What causes xerosis cutis/dry skin?

Causes fall into two categories: either the skin fails to store moisture, or the barrier function breaks down, allowing moisture to escape. Of course, both can also occur at the same time. External factors like climate can also cause dry skin. Essentially, anything that decreases the natural moisturizing factors – NMF – in the skin contributes to dryness. In addition, it can be caused by other diseases such as diabetes or as a side effect of medications. Dry skin can also be a symptom of conditions like dehydration or inflammatory skin disorders.

Can dry skin be addressed with a change in diet or by drinking more water?

That depends on the cause of dry skin. If it is due to malnutrition or dehydration, this will help. However, if dry skin is a symptom of dermatological or internal disease, this must be treated. In addition to treatment, basic skincare helps reduce the symptoms of dry skin regardless of its root cause.

What are the most effective ingredients and formulations for treating dry skin?
