Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated each year on the 18th July, Madiba’s Birthday. Mandela Day is not seen as a public holiday, but rather as a day to honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela, through volunteering and community service.
The idea behind the day is to volunteer 67 minutes of your day to do something for someone else. Whether that be handing out peanut butter sandwiches or spending time reading to the elderly. By devoting 67 minutes of your time.
The Mandela Day campaign message is “Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67 minutes”
We’re doing our part on the 18th at St Anne’s Home in Cape Town. A women’s home for abused, destitute, pregnant women and their children. St Anne’s opened their doors in 1904 to offer shelter for women and their children they also provide a creche/children’s program as well as counselling and group work.
St Anne’s Vision is:
“To see women with children living free from abuse, poverty and discrimination by offering the world a model of care and social empowerment.”
St Anne’s Mission is:
“As an expression of God’s love, we seek to provide shelter and support for pregnant, abused and homeless women with children; through an holistic self empowerment programme that develops social, personal, creative, vocational skills within a framework of Christian values and discipline and a culture of mutual learning, accountability and respect for the unique value of every human being.”
We will be visiting St Anne’s this Thursday and will be spending time with the ladies, their children as well as be donating goodies on behalf of rubybox. #rubybox #MANDELADAY #67minutes
