One of the best alternatives for a commercial laundry detergent is right in your pantry: vinegar.

Clean your washing machine – A clean washing machine means freshly clean clothing. Run your washing machine without any clothing in it. Do so by adding hot water and a cup of vinegar, this will reduce the lint and soap buildup in the machine.
Stops colours from fading – Over time detergents as well as sunlight and the usually wear and tear can cause your clothing to fade. Use vinegar to help your clothes last longer, add 1/2 a cup of to your load of laundry before hand.
