Well hair loss is more common than you may think. According to scientific studies women make up to 40% of hair loss suffers in just the United States alone. It is important to remember that hair loss in women can actually be a warning sign for underlying health issues, associated with your hormones, metabolism and your thyroid.

Therefore the sooner these conditions are found, the better. Hair loss is certainly nothing to be ashamed about, especially when it gives us clues on our health and well being. Despite what you have been told, not all hair loss looks the same.

Take a look below at the main types of hair loss in order to get a better understanding of this condition.

Receding hairline and thinning hair

This is one of the most common causes of hair loss and is actually hereditary and usually occurs gradually as you get older. If you are noticing thinning at the temples and in the hairline, that is a sign that the follicle is affected. We would advise you to see a dermatologist who would be able to perform a screening to pick up underlying issues like iron deficiency or hormonal imbalances.

Shedding

Shedding is often common after physical traumas, such as childbirth or surgery. It can also be a result of emotional traumas or periods of stress. Another factor can be as simple as changing your birth control brand which can take a toll on your body an throw off you hormones which can in turn results in hair loss.

The good news is that all the hair you shed can come back. But first and for most you need to focus on your mental health and take care of your body as well as manage your stress levels and as soon as all is normalised you will find a decrease in your hair loss.

Breakage near the scalp

If you find that your hair is breaking in the middle of the strand or a few inches away from your scalp, this is a sign of weakened keratin. In this case we suggest you give your hair a rest from heat, bleach and dye until you see an overall improvement in your hair texture.

Baldness

Baldness is caused when the immune system attacks the hair follicle. This type of hair loss occurs suddenly and you will notice the appearance of bald patches occuring over time. A small percentage of people who experience baldness may even experience eyelash and eyebrow hair loss.

The condition associated with balding is known as alopecia areata. This is a chronic condition and the sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner you can figure out your next steps.

If you find yourself suffering from any of the above hair loss conditions we would suggest you seek professional help from your GP. X
