Do the words “if you pull a face like that, it’ll stay that way” ring a bell? Turns out our moms may have been onto something. Dr Janet Wu, a respected dermatologist, believes that our muscular movements contribute to skin ageing.
Dr Wu explains that the way we manipulate our faces can cause wrinkles, and as a result, she suggests avoiding certain “bad” habits.
Her biggest concern? Chewing bubblegum. “Over time, your jaw muscles build up, they get bulky, and that contributes to a jowled look. Not only that, but over time, chewing gum can also contribute to wrinkles above your upper lip,” Dr Wu said. Can’t go without it after lunch? She suggests having a mint instead.
Ever hear people say that sleeping on your side contributes to wrinkles? According to Dr Wu, “If you sleep on your face and you squash your face for seven, eight, nine hours at night, it’s creating a crease in the skin.” She believes that over time, these creases translate into permanent wrinkles, and that we should sleep on a silk or satin pillow case to reduce the risks, as it’ll create less friction.
Her final bit of advice? Drink from a glass, without a straw. “Every time you suck from a straw, you pucker, and over time that squeezing increasingly leads to wrinkles.”
According to our fave scientific beauty experts, The Beauty Brains, wrinkles develop when the collagen in the deeper layers of the skin collapses or gets damaged, and has nothing to do with surface manipulation.
They’re not convinced by Dr Wu’s theories, and we probably won’t be giving up our habits just yet. But, it’s certainly got us thinking!
Comment below and let us know if you will be changing any of your habits to limit those fine lines?

Thanks for the great magazine
Wow!! I did not know this😮😮.. But it kind of makes sense, especially when you think of if you are sad and frustrated all the time, your skin will definitely show wrinkles.. I get it!!!..
Thr bubble gum part! Yet we opt for bubble gum as it is less sugar compared to sweets
Hahaha I’m so done chewing bubblegum!! Yeah ladies invest in some collagen.
This one was posted on my birth OMG is this a sign haha. Will definitely be making some changes and not use a straw and not chew gum. I love the “if you pull a face like that, it’ll stay that way” for some reason it reminded me of a Susan Sarandon movie
This is information I’ve never thought of before. Very interesting and informative
I need to stop drinking from a straw am not ready for wrinkles yet😅😅.
Time to change all the bad habits 😉. The article is so interesting. Learnt a lot.
I had heard about the sleeping thing, especially on regular/cotton pillow cases and sheets. If this worked I would love it. But I need to sleep on my side and only feel comfortable on cotton pillow cases and sheets, if you can’t sleep/get poor sleep then that is going to be very ageing too, possibly even worse.
