How To Style Natural Hair

Issa Rae hairstylist Felicia Leatherwood gives us all the tips when it comes to styling natural hair.

Take a look below at the best way to style your natural hair, regardless of what growth stage your hair may be in.

Stage One –  Buzzcut, Short Afro

This is when you decide to chop it all off and restart your natural hair journey. During this stage creams and gels will be your best friend. If you would like to define your curls Felicia suggests using curling cream or gel by working in the product little by little, messaging the product into your scalp.

To create a short afro, Felicia suggests a detangling brush to help smear the product evenly while separating strands to increase definition.

Stage Two – Short to Medium-Sized Afro

When it comes to styling a short to medium afro Felicia suggests the use of clip-ins. This is to avoid shrinkage while providing volume and length but still allows for that short feel. Clip-ins also allow you to play with style and change your look up with minimal effort. Take a look below for some inspo when it comes to using clip-ins.

Stage Three – Shoulder Length

According the Felicia at this stage of natural hair growth, most women tend to stick to wash and go or twist outs. As this is the perfect stage to incorporate accessories into ones look. Her favourite look when it comes to long hair is twist-outs which allow the hair to can hang loose as well as adding a few cornrows or gold accessories.
