As we step into September, we celebrate the arrival of spring—a time of renewal, growth, and transformation. It’s also Heritage Month in South Africa, a time to reflect on the rich cultural landscape that defines our nation. For many, Heritage Day on 24 September is marked by colorful outfits, traditional foods, and rituals that showcase the diverse backgrounds that make up our country. Yet, for some, this focus on the external markers of heritage can feel exclusionary, especially for those whose heritage isn’t so clearly defined.
I often reflect on what we mean when we talk about heritage and culture. For many of us, these terms carry complex layers shaped by history, family, and personal experience. I grew up in a typically South African household—a mix of Xhosa heritage from my father’s side and a more diverse, blended background from my mother. My father’s Xhosa traditions often intertwined with my mother’s mixed heritage, creating a home where culture was fluid, adaptable, and defined by values rather than strict customs.
Like many South African families, we embraced our multi-tribal, multi-religious, and multi-cultural identity. Our heritage was less about rigid traditions and more about finding unity in diversity. We held onto the values that strengthened us—honoring each other, celebrating our differences, and loving deeply.
Spring: A Time for Renewal and Reflection
Spring invites us to think about change, growth, and the things we hold onto. Just as the season transforms the landscape, we have the opportunity to transform how we see ourselves and our heritage. Rather than being confined to our past, we can define our heritage in ways that bring us closer together.
Heritage isn’t just about where we come from; it’s about where we’re going. It’s the shared values, the daily choices, and the love that we bring into our homes. Whether your roots are deeply planted in a specific tradition or your family tree branches out in many directions, your heritage is yours to define.
Building a Heritage of Values
In our family, we’ve learned that our true heritage lies in our shared values:
- We are stronger together. Our strength comes from honoring each other’s experiences, backgrounds, and unique perspectives.
- We honor each other as humans. Beyond cultural markers, we see and value each other simply for being human – sinobuntu!
- Our culture is defined by love. We live by the tradition of loving God and loving people, letting love guide our actions and decisions.
As we step into this season of change, let’s focus on the heritage we’re building today—a heritage of kindness, unity, and shared values. Whether you celebrate with traditional foods, stories, or simply by spending time together, let this spring be a reminder that we are all part of something beautiful and evolving.

Heritage is about who you are and where you have come from to get to where you are today. I will be spending more time in nature this spring with my friends and family.
Heritage it’s about who you are and where you have come from to get to where you are today.
Heritage, to me, represents the collective memory and legacy of where we come from—our traditions, values, and the stories that have shaped us. It’s the tapestry of culture, language, and history that defines who we are and connects us to those who came before.
Embracing the spirit of change, especially in spring, feels like honoring that heritage while being open to growth and new possibilities. Spring is a time of renewal, where we can take the richness of our past and infuse it with fresh perspectives, fostering a future that’s both grounded in tradition and alive with innovation.
Celebrating diversity means recognizing and valuing the unique aspects of each individual and community while also seeking the common threads that bring us together. It’s about understanding that our differences make us richer, and that by finding shared values and goals, we can build stronger, more inclusive communities. Heritage is the foundation, and our willingness to evolve and adapt is the bridge to a more united future.
