When it comes to having sensitive skin we are not too sure which is the most challenging to deal with: the bad reactions or the fact that those reactions can be completely unpredictable.
So below you will find a few tips on how to keep your sensitive skin happy.
Use as few products at a time as possible with as few ingredients as possible –
When dealing with sensitive skin it is said that you should follow the principle of less is more according to dermatologists. Therefore if you have sensitive skin and suffer from skin conditions like rosacae, psoriasis or eczema opt for products with less ingredients in.
Fewer products and fewer ingredients means that you have less of a chance of reacting to something in your skincare routine. This actually makes the basics of a skincare routine for sensitive skin pretty simple all you need is a good cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen.
Avoid the temptation to over-wash or over-exfoliate your face –
Believe it or not but your skin actually does a great job of staying clean naturally without the need for harsh cleanser, exfoliation and scrubbing. The skin naturally creates lipids and proteins which it in turn uses to form a protective skin barrier.
By over washing your face you wash away and break down these lipids and proteins. Making it even more important for people with sensitive skin to avoid over-exfoliating. As this thins the protective barrier of your skin, allowing for irritating chemicals to penetrate the skin much easier.

Take the time to patch test new products –
If you have sensitive skin, always test a small amount of the new product on the inside of your arm overnight. If you have no reaction in the morning, this is a clear indication that it is safe to apply to your face.
Identify your triggers –
One of the best ways to avoid sensitive skin is to identify and avoid the ingredients which trigger the reactions. This differs from person to person, making the easiest way to identify these ingredients is to undergo skin patch testing.
Introduce new products into your routine slowly –
Some of the most effective skincare products you can use, contain retinoids in them which are known to be an irritation on sensitive skin. So if you are looking to try using one, it is crucial to introduce it slowly into your routine.
Limit your use of the new product to just a couple of nights a week (max 3). If your skin can tolerate the product after a few weeks, it is suggested that you slowly increase the frequency all the way up to every night.
Keep showers short and efficient –
Sensitive skin doesn’t only exist on your face, but it can occur in areas on the rest of your body. When bathing it is recommended that you use a fragrance-free soap bar.
It is also recommended keeping your shower time short to under 10 minutes and to use only warm water. Avoid using washcloths as these can also irritate the skin.
