You are what you eat

Your skin is the largest organ in your body so it’s important to take care of it!  It’s not always creams and lotions that have the most affect, it’s also what we eat and drink. “We’re actually learning that poor nutrition is just as bad for your skin as cigarette smoking,” says Patricia Farris, MD, dermatologist and author of The Sugar Detox.

We’ve compiled a list of the ten most common foods and drinks that are recognised to have a negative effect on your skin.

Sweets

They have little to no nutritional value. Sugar also degrades collagen and elastin, the proteins that keeps skin soft, supple, and springy.

Dairy

Many dairy cows are fed hormones to keep them lactating all year round. When we drink that milk (or eat the yogurt, ice cream, cheese, etc.) we drink those hormones too. Dairy can also cause an increase sebum, the substance that can cause pore clogging in some people.

Alcohol

Drinking causes dehydration in the body. Dehydration leads to dryness, wrinkles and loss of ‘plumpness’ and elasticity in your skin. Research has also shown that Rosacea is often linked to heavy drinking.

Salt

Too much salt can cause your body to retain water which can cause puffy eyes and facial bloating

Coffee

Drinking too much caffeine can cause your body to release ‘cortisol’ which is a stress hormone – this can lead to dull skin as well as acceleration of ageing.

Fried Food

French fries and similar deep fried food contain transfats that pile on the pounds, but also slow the blood circulation. Reduced blood circulation can cause the pores in your skin to become clogged and bacteria on the skin to build up.

Artificial Additives

Some artificial colourings, preservatives and flavourings found in many processed foods can cause inflammation and histamine reactions. Our bodies tend to store these chemicals in our tissue, which means that over time the problem only gets worst.

There you have it rubies! Rather top up on water, fish, fruit and vegetables to ensure a healthy skin, inside and out!

Do you know of any other foods that affect your skin in a negative way? We’d love to hear from you x

I have read up that doughnuts are a no go because its a double dose of grease and sugar in one which is not good for the skin at all. Thank you Rubybox for the insightful article I will stick to water, fish, fruit and vegetables to ensure I can have a healthy skin, inside and out!☺ Wow who would have thought Diary can have a negative impact on ones skin and some things on the list we eat without thinking.
