1. Get to know your skin type

It’s so important to understand and get to know your skin type. If you are unaware or misinformed, you could compromise your skin’s natural balance and this could trigger irritation, inflammation, breakouts or even premature ageing when using the wrong products. Not sure of your skin type? The most common skin types are oily, ace-prone, dry, sensitive and mature skin.

It’s very important to note at this stage that you can be more than one skin type and it can change over time or even through seasons. So, never stop listening to your skin!

2. Make sure you know how to layer your skin

Apply your skin care products correctly. It might sound simple but this is a common mistake made by many. By doing this incorrectly you could prevent certain products from being fully absorbed by your skin. The general rule is to apply the most lightweight formulas first so they can be easily absorbed without the intensity of the heavier creams causing a barrier.

Rule of thumb when applying creams when it comes to thicker creams, give your skin time to absorb the product – give or take a few minutes.

3. Too much of a good thing

Remember no one likes too much of a good thing – this is the case for skincare too. If you apply too much moisturizer, the product will likely block your pores. This is also a total waste of product and money – so pay attention to the sizing guide below.

4. ALWAYS double cleanse

Always double cleanse – what does this mean in normal terms? Wash your face twice that way you ensure all the dirt, bacteria, oil, and pollution that’s built up on your skin during the day has been removed.

5. Never forget to do a patch test

When testing out new products always do a patch test. What is this – when it’s a small amount of product that you put on your inner arm to see how your skin reacts to the formula. This way you avoid your entire face being covered in an allergic reaction.

6. Don’t use expired products

Just like eating expired food is a big no-no, the same goes for beauty products. These products harbor bacteria that can lead to infections and irritations. So here’s a general rule if you can’t remember when you bought your face cream, foundation or mascara – throw it out!

7. Don’t be afraid of pharmacy skincare

Don’t assume that a good skincare routine needs to cost a lot of money. Some of the products in your local pharmacy are incredible and even better they are affordable as well.

8. Purged skin, don’t panic

Don’t stress if you have just started using a new product and your skin starts acting up. This is called purging and what happens is your skin gets an irritant reaction to a product, which leads to piling up of skin cells and underlying contents.

The imbalance could be caused by water in the skin, an imbalance in the way your cells exfoliate, or just an imbalance of the elements within your skin. If that is the case, don’t blame the product, it might be causing the reaction but it could be something about your skin that needs to be treated, and then you can continue using the product again.

9. SUNSCREEN everything

We are serious, it’s probably the most important thing you can do for your skin. 90% of how your skin ages is within your control and linked to sun exposure, yip you heard that right. Even when it’s a cloudy day always protect your skin by wearing an SPF30 or above with a 5-star UVA rating.

10. Make masks a regular thing

We love this trend – when you sleep your skin repairs and replenishes and your skin’s metabolism improves, enabling your skin cells to reproduce more efficiently.

11. Sleeping masks are a MUST!

Wearing a hydrating overnight mask, you’ll enhance the regeneration process, this will act as a barrier against dirt or bacteria. Yay to waking up to your best skin.

12. Switch up your skincare throughout the year

The weather causes havoc on your skin. Think about it – during wintertime we are constantly exposed to low temperatures and increased indoor heating which equals dried-out skin. In the summer, we have to deal with humidity, sun exposure, and climbing temperatures – which causes oily skin, dark spots, and even sun damage.

Therefore, it’s essential to combat these opposing temperatures with different formulas and skincare routines.

13. Skin types change with age

As you age your skin changes and your skincare routine needs to change. With aging comes a reduction in collagen production so you might want to take your time to examine the changes in your skin as you get older – helping cater to its every needs no matter your age.

 14. Eat and drink with your skin in mind

What you put in your mouth really does make a difference not only to your figure but to your skin. To get that glow you need to be supplying your body with beauty-boosting vitamins and minerals. As well as avoiding certain foods if you want to look after your skin. Water is also vital – make sure you drink at least 2 liters per day.

15. Hormones impact your skin

Hormones impact a lot of things, our mood, energy levels but they have a major impact to our skin. By understanding your monthly cycle, you are able to tweak and tailor your routine in order to ensure your skin is living its best life.

16. Exfoliation is key

Exfoliation is vital to great skin. Chemical exfoliators like AHAs, BHAs, or enzyme-based formula are the best to cleanse pores and dissolve dead skin cells as well as promote skin regeneration, leaving your skin clean and glowing. Don’t over-exfoliate two to three times a week will do just fine.

17. Retinol isn’t something to be afraid of

It’s not scary we promise. It helps fade scars, improve the appearance of fine lines, and even out skin tone. It’s just important to know how and when to add it to your routine.

18. Vitamin C is the ultimate glow getter

Vitamin C is the strongest antioxidant available. It helps protect the skin from any environmental stressors that accelerate aging. It also works to brighten your skin and works in tandem with your SPF.

19. Moisture is everything

Hydration station – your skin needs it. Even if you have oily skin you need to keep your skin hydrated. Often if your skin isn’t hydrated your body overcompensates and produces more oil – not good. Make sure to moisturize twice a day.

20. Don’t forget about your neck

Does your neck need looking after? YES – That’s a new one for us. Turns out it’s the most common skincare area that is left out. The entire skincare routine that you follow needs to also be done to your neck. That’s right, cleansing, toning, moisturizing also give it a gentle massage now and then.

21. Leave your zits alone!

This one is a standard and often so hard to follow. By touching your pimple, you are spreading bacteria making the area worse. Please we beg you to leave your pimple alone, you’ll thank us later.
