April Red-Hot rubymen - Rubber Duc
1. Please tell us a little about yourselves and how you got your start in the music industry?
Hi, I'm Nick, and I like to party. I have 1 dog, old girl, full-out granny sometimes, but I love her to bits. My favourite colour is green, although sometimes an autumn yellow gives me goose bumps. I'd say that I eat pretty much anything and everything besides seafood, eggplant, baby marrow, chicken livers, and olives. I like to keep healthy and I have recently taken up boxing for the second time. You should all give it a try. BEST cardio. I was introduced to a guitar by my father at the age of 8. He forced me to take guitar lessons, and my guitar teacher forced me to sing. Clearly I was indirectly forced into my career! But I LOVE it and wouldn't change a thing! (NICK)
When I was 9 years old my mom took me to see my first live performance and from then on I knew exactly what I wanted to do and it was music and the saxophone all the way! I fell in love! Over the past 12 years playing with different bands and artists and finally finding my sound and style with Rubber Duc, has been quite the journey… For all of us! :) (SHELDON)
I’m Amiel, I’m 22 years old and I’ve been playing music professionally for two years, with my first paid gig being a small corporate. I had to learn 22 songs from 80’s. Was so EPIC! (AMIEL)
When I was just a 12-year-old tadpole, my dad took a job in Copenhagen, Denmark. As part of the schooling curriculum we had to take a creative class: either Visual Art, Drama or Music.
Being the man-boy I was, I chose music as I was too manly for visual art or drama.
Who knew that would be such an influential decision? (BRENDAN)
2. What is the most romantic thing you have all done on date?
Dressed up like Robin Hood, stole her from the table where she was waiting for me, told her to put on the Little Red Riding Hood outfit I had hired for her, and went pub hopping! Is that Romantic? Or just weird? (NICK)
I'm a simple kind of guy, I like to do things the old fashion way by showing my lady a nice night with dinner (sometimes cooked by me as I love to cook) and maybe a movie, or some good music and wine. Quality time spent together and little things mean a lot! (SHELDON)
Moonlight picnic whilst serenading her with some sweet music. (AMIEL)
I once spelled "romantic" correctly on the sms I sent a girl. Just kidding, I do really like to spoil a lady every now and then. She deserves to know how appreciated she is. (BRENDAN)
3. What does beauty mean to you?
"That's always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they're pretty. It's like picking your breakfast cereals based on colour instead of taste." - John Green, Paper Towns
True that right? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's like an artist and his art, a writer and his words, a composer and his melody. We all find beauty in ways unique to us as individuals. Beauty is definitely not basted with blush. The canvas need to be treated first. (NICK)
Beauty means many things to me and I see it in many different aspects of life, it's the best thing to look at :) (SHELDON)
Beauty is great but a beautiful soul is better. (AMIEL)
Beauty. I don't think beauty can be explained, as it's not something that is tangible. There is beauty to be found in everything, you've just gotta be open to seeing it. (BRENDAN)
4. If you could go on a date with anyone who would that be?
Scarlett Johansson (NICK)
Probably Jennifer Aniston, she's 50 and cool.. (SHELDON)
Jennifer Aniston, I love her… (AMIEL)
I would, without hesitation, go on a date with Taylor Swift's laugh. But the rest of her can tag along to ;) (BRENDAN)
5. Highlight of your careers so far?
There have been so many highlights for me, but I must say that performing at Jacques Kallis's 40th was something special. He is a South African legend! Otherwise our trip to Dubai was legendary! (NICK)
We've had so many amazing times as a band so far, highlights would have to be some of the cool festivals and shows we've played and of course listening to ourselves on radio :) (SHELDON)
Opening for Milky Chance in Durban was a huge honour. (AMIEL)
There are so many. As our brand grows the highlights get better and better. I'd need a bigger article to mention all of them! (BRENDAN)
6. Best pick-up lines?
Find an accessory that catches your eye. "Wow, your shoes are pretty." Sparks convo, it's way less cheesy than "You have beautiful eyes", and let’s face it, it's flipping fantastic when somebody compliments you on your style! I love it when I get a shoe compliment! (NICK)
I don't know, I guess pick up lines should be simple.. Something like hi what's your name, I'm Sheldon nice to meet you… Or something lol! (SHELDON)
Hi, I’m ready… (AMIEL)
My best pick-up lines are the ones I don't stumble over. But like a lactose-intolerant pizza, I make sure they're cheese free. (BRENDAN)
7. What's next for Rubber Duc?
ALBUM! We need to get it out ASAP, so we are working hard at it! (NICK)
More shows, more music, more travelling, new music videos and our debut album! (SHELDON)
Keep the good tunes rollin’ on (AMIEL)
The album. At the moment we're taking some of our studio gear whenever we travel. We've been doing some writing in different places around the country, drawing new inspiration, and laying down some preproduction ideas. The next step is to take what we've written to the studio and record the album. (BRENDAN)
8. Single, taken, roaming tinder?
Single and sometimes roaming Tinder like Wildebeest during the great migration! SUPERLIKE! (NICK)
I've just dropped my latest single. It's me. I'm single. But I won't lie, swiping on Tinder in some of the weird and wonderful places we travel to is possibly the most entertaining part of touring. (BRENDAN)
9. Funny story from when you're all on tour?
We love messing with Sheldon. We either hide in cupboards and scare him, or we make him believe something ridiculous! It's amazing how we all just know when to go long with it. There is no winking involved. Now that involves some skill. (NICK)
Any of the times we prank Sheldon, we usually pre plan some sort of joke and all get in on it ‘cause he is so gullible (AMIEL)
Being the trusting young lad that Shel is, he seems to be the victim of most of our pranks. We once convinced him that the house we stayed at in Cradock was haunted by an old army general, and kept him up all night, scratching on windows and making things mysteriously move. There are many stories, but at the end of the day, we love what we do, and make the most epic memories travelling with our whole team, who have become a badass family unit.
We laugh 24/7 when on tour, so too many to pick from. (SHELDON)
