So New York fashion week has come and gone, and as always it showcased some of the season’s hottest new beauty trends. This year was all about taking risks, and we saw makeup artists and hairstylists take it up a notch by transforming some of our fave looks. From extreme brows to lacquered eyeshadow, the runways had it all, and thanks to Maybelline who provided the makeup, the makeup artists had a wide variety of products to work with. To help us pick the best of the best, we asked a couple of our favourite beauty writers for their standouts, as well as some tips on how to get it just right.
Chereen Gibson, beauty ed at O, The Oprah Magazine, couldn’t get enough of the striking eye makeup seen at Rachel Zoe. “As an eye liner devotee, it would make sense that one of my favourite beauty looks from New York Fashion Week is the feline-esque smoky eyes worn by models at Rachel Zoe’s show. This look is a great alternative to Autumn’s usual bold lip and is far easier to wear. I personally find wearing lipstick on a daily basis to be too high-maintenance, so I usually opt for a bold eye paired with a nude, glossy lip. I prefer to use a gel liner with a fine, eye liner brush, and have finally mastered the art of the flick: follow the lower lashline up towards your eyebrow, as opposed to trying to create the wing from the upper lashline. And my number one beauty rule when going for a dramatic eye makeup look? Concealer, of course!”
Kim Gray, editor at kimgray.co.za loved the understated trend. “As much as I love to play with makeup, I don’t wear much myself. For me great skin is key. I think that’s why I loved the clean, natural faces at BCBG Max Azria, DKNY and J. Mendel. Investing in a really good concealer is a must to rid dark circles, red patches or spots and then to apply a sheer tinted moisturiser over that for a healthy, natural and radiant looking skin. If you’ve got freckles, you should see them! I of course never leave the house without lashings of Mascara. It’s my one beauty tool I’ll never go without!,” said Kim.
Margaux Knuppe, our very own beauty ed is a fan of Carlos Miele’s gilt goddesses. “Bronzer works across seasons, whether it’s full-on bronze in summer or a hint across your cheekbones in winter; skin always look enviably healthy.” Maybelline New York Makeup Artist for Spain, Gato was responsible for transforming the wintry faces into sun-kissed complexions at the show. To get the look, “Apply a stroke of bronzing powder on both sides of the forehead down to the temples. Then focus attention on the eyes.” Gato recommends applying a long-lasting neutral shadow before applying a darker shadow to the corner of the eyes and champagne or taupe highlighter to the inner corners. For a really gorgeous glow, “Apply highlighter along the tops of your cheekbones and then blend more bronzer on to the apples of your cheek,” he says.
